INDEPENDENT ADVICE
CLARITY
When you’re navigating technology, people and uncertainty, sometimes the hardest thing is knowing what comes next. Having confidential space to explore it fully with someone who understands the landscape can make all the difference. The kind that brings clarity, confidence and the judgement to move forward.
The problem isn’t you. It’s the noise.
Independent advice for professionals, directors and business owners navigating technology, people and uncertainty or complexity
“Sometimes the most useful question isn’t ‘What can this technology do?’ It’s ‘What are we actually trying to achieve?’”
Do these situations sound familiar?
- You’re facing competing priorities
- AI is moving fast, but hasty decisions have consequences
- Growth that’s outpaced the technology holding it together
- Too many certainties from people with something to sell
- Your role is running its course or hitting a limit
- Lost track of who you are and what you bring
…or maybe it’s something else
What would you gain with someone to talk it through with?
- A fresh perspective and independent judgement
- The confidence to tell good advice from noise
- Acting with clarity on what actually matters
When nobody’s asking the right questions
Every technology wave arrives with the same promises. The process gets faster, cheaper, smoother. But the experience that understood the implications gets drowned out.
The expertise that could see a better way gets bypassed. The questions that would have caught problems don’t get asked. It looks like progress. It looks like capability.
It works. Until it doesn’t. And nobody’s quite sure why.
When everything starts to sound like noise
What fills the gap is noise. Vendors, platforms, consultants, all with confident answers. But no one knows the real questions to ask.
And underneath that noise, the complexity hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s been hidden by the tool, the platform, the system. Out of sight, out of reach. What’s left is everyone else’s apparent certainties. Is it a genuine view? Performed scepticism? Someone protecting their corner?
A conversation you won’t need to edit
What most people in that position need isn’t another opinion. It isn’t a framework, resilience coaching, or a better five step plan. It’s somewhere to think. Somewhere the full weight is welcome and witnessed. Where complexity isn’t too much, and the thoughts you’ve been carrying get space to be spoken freely.
Not a conversation you have to edit before you have it.
By finding patterns in what seems complex we can get to the heart of what matters.
And when that happens, things start to change.
Gain a clearer perspective on the way forward
The world doesn’t change, but your relationship with it does. That confused, lost or just plain empty feeling starts to lift. Decisions become clearer because you can hear your own truth. The path forward starts to clarify. And you remember how to trust your own judgement again.
And the people around you? They’ll see the difference.
You talk. I listen. We find the way forward
When we start to work together I’ll invite you to say the things you haven’t been able to voice anywhere else. Unedited. Without having to make it make sense.
We start with a free first conversation. You talk for as long as you need.
Afterwards I’ll sit with what was said. Then I’ll come back to you the next day with a summary of my view and the next steps. If it feels like the right fit to you, it will be the beginning of a new way forward.
From there, we move at your pace. Calls that last as long as needed. No clock watching. Just the space to think things through as they come up, with someone who understands both technical complexity and the cost of carrying it. The reflection between conversations is part of the process too, with messaging support between calls where needed.

Marcus clearly has my best interests at heart and I trust him totally. He also has a cute sense of humour.”

Dr Marcus Coles and the experience I bring
I started out as a research scientist, working on industrial and government programmes. Academia wasn’t quite the right fit, and I’d been told I’d never survive in the real world. So I left to find out. A gap year in art and design turned out to be the missing piece. Science, art, and the early days of the web came together in a way that made complete sense to me.
“
It’s rare to find someone with such clear technical and commercial understanding. Marcus really grasped the realities faced by our business. Our relationship is in its fourteenth year and Marcus’ skills have made him an essential part of my team.”
Malcolm Padwick
CEO Wananchi Ltd.
For many years I ran an independent digital practice across a broad range of clients. From first-generation websites to complex platforms. From agency partnerships to career coaching and legal services. From startups finding their feet to luxury care groups navigating growth.
Most of those relationships ran easily into double figures in years.
Along the way I learned that the presenting problem is rarely the real problem.
After many years of that I followed my heart and started a wellbeing practice. And from there I came full circle to this. Something that holds both worlds, because in my experience they were never really separate.

Who I Am
I have been working in digital strategy for 25 years. I started out as a research scientist, which taught me to ask the right questions, sit with complexity without rushing to a comfortable answer, and explain findings to people who need to act on them.
That training shapes everything I do now.
I also run The Oak Sanctuary, a private healing space in Hampshire. The two things are not as separate as they might appear. Both are about helping people find clarity, understanding what is actually going on, and moving forward with more confidence than they arrived with.
That is what I am here for…
When you’re ready, let’s talk…
